Imogen Davis

Throughout this project I have gained an immense fondness for graphic incorporation into my photography and have looked into photographers such as Alma Haser and Helen Sear, who include their own spin on their images and have found their own original and recognisable style. Alma Haser with her series, “Cosmic Surgery” and Helen Sears “bird cages” of which helped me with the first part of this module, and aided my evolution to my final series. This is what I hope to achieve for my
own work eventually, starting with this body of work which I have chosen to create through black and white self portraits, yet these plain black and white images are my canvas in which I experiment upon and paint on virtual illustrations. My technique works well because I can think of a visual aspect I would like to add through graphic design and cater my photography needs to the final outcome I have imagined for the image, yet quite often this will change and develop throughout my drawing process because I can edit the drawings to fit certain features and shapes or even erase a
whole drawing and work on a new idea. The idea of incorporating graphic design came from my first series of this module, when I used chalk to draw on my scenes and backgrounds in the studio. The idea behind this series is very personal, and is trying to demonstrate a loss of identity and empathy, even emotion. Yet through concealing emotions behind these drawings of flowers, I have created a new sense of emotion, through changing the mood of the original picture we are unsure about how
the model is feeling. The flowers are there to conceal emotion like a mask, yet also express and enhance the fact that emotions are a part of life, and that whilst many go through them every day, we come out looking brighter and can still thrive.
